Plastic surgeons now have the ability to remove fat using laser technology. Laser liposuction is less traumatic on the body than traditional liposuction. The minimally invasive approach produces effective outcomes with very little downtime. The experienced Chicago plastic surgeons at Chicago Aesthetic Surgery Institute and NeoDerma Medspa use the Sciton ProLipo PLUS™ laser platform, which is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for safe use. Ideal candidates for laser liposuction have mild to moderate amounts of excess fat, with good skin elasticity and strong overall health. Candidates should not be significantly overweight, as laser liposuction is not an obesity treatment. They should also have realistic expectations of the procedure and its outcomes.
Laser liposuction can treat large areas of the body like the buttocks, thighs and waist, and also contour smaller areas like the chin and neck. It can also be used in the treatment of gynecomastia.
During laser liposuction treatment, a solution containing saline, anesthetic and epinephrine is injected into the treatment area. This constricts blood vessels and minimizes blood loss. Laser energy is directed at the treatment area, and it heats up the fat cells until they liquefy. Then, the liquid is suctioned from the body through cannulas.
Laser liposuction treatment does not require extensive downtime or recovery. There may be some swelling or minor bruising, but the bruising should disappear quickly and the swelling can be controlled with a compression garment, if need be. Chicago laser liposuction patients are urged to rest for several days, after which time they are typically able to resume their regular routines.
The ProLipo PLUS not only reduces or eliminates areas of fat, but it also tightens skin by heating the soft tissue and stimulating the production of collagen. It is a quick procedure that does not require general anesthesia or a prolonged downtime. Chicago laser liposuction patients can typically resume their normal activities within a few days.
Possible risks include irregular skin contours, hematoma, infection and scarring. There is a slight risk of skin burns but the ProLipo PLUS is equipped with Sciton's TempASSURE which measures internal tissue temperature precisely and frequently to keep it from overheating and becoming uncomfortable or painful.
