Candidates for Chemical Peels

Suitable candidates for chemical peels may have:

Chemical Peel Treatment

During chemical peel procedure, the patient's face is cleansed, and then a chemical solution is brushed onto the skin and left on for between 10 and 30 minutes (depending on the type of peel).  The chemicals are then neutralized and washed off.

For the best results, a series of peels is usually required.

Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are suitable for individuals with minor skin imperfections. It is not appropriate for patients with severe acne, rosacea or other serious skin conditions.

TCA (trichloroacetic acid) — the mildest chemical peel. TCA peels remove only the outermost layers of skin for a light exfoliation. These peels are most appropriate for surface blemishes.

AHA (alphahydroxy acids) — includes several types of fruit acid peels (glycolic and lactic acids). These peels are most effective on mild skin problems like areas of sun damage, dry or scaly patches, fine wrinkles and pimples.

Phenol Peel — the strongest chemical peel. Phenol peels are best suited for deep wrinkles and serious discoloration. They are typically not recommended for darker skin tones. The phenol solution is left on the skin for up to 30 minutes; after it has been removed, the skin will develop a crust. A thick coat of petroleum jelly will be applied to cover the crust, and may remain for up to two days.

Recovering from a Chemical Peel

Light chemical peels (TCA and AHA) will have a shorter recovery time than phenol peels. Redness, stinging, crusting and irritation may occur after light chemical peels, but should subside quickly. After a phenol peel, patients may have longer-lasting redness, puffiness, peeling and discomfort, and are advised to take off about a week of work and other social activities.

Benefits and Risks of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are quick, effective procedures that can greatly improve the tone and texture of the skin. Downtime after a chemical peel is minimal, except with a phenol peel. Peels can reverse the effects of years in the sun, smoking and other bad habits. Anesthesia is normally only needed for the deepest peels. Chemical peel complications are rare, but include infection, unfavorable changes in pigmentation and scarring.
