Breast Lift

Many women are disappointed to see their breasts sag and droop as part of the aging process, post-pregnancy effects, or genetics. Perky breasts are a sign of youth and vitality, and it is common for women to desire a breast lift later in life or after having children. In many cases, elevating the breasts into a more attractive position has an enormously positive impact on a woman’s self-esteem.

Surgery Candidates

The best Chicago breast lift candidates are women who are healthy physically and emotionally and suffer from saggy-looking breasts. The prospective candidates should not smoke for at least several weeks before and after the procedure. It is important that the candidate have realistic expectations about breast lift surgery. Although the surgery will significantly improve the appearance of sagging breasts, it will not solve psychological issues or other self-image problems.

The Procedure

Anesthesia is administered by our in-house anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetists to ensure maximum patient comfort. During breast lift surgery, the surgeon makes the incisions either:

  • Around the areola
  • Around the areola and vertically down to the crease of the breast (forming a key shape)
  • Around the areola, down to the crease of the breast and horizontally around the crease (creating an anchor shape)

The surgeon removes excess breast tissue through the incisions and sculpts the remaining tissue. He may reposition the nipple and areola into a higher position. Excess skin is excised and the remaining breast skin is tightened. The incisions are closed with sutures or stitches.

Recovery

Women are encouraged to rest at home for about a week before returning to work, and wait a month before engaging in any vigorous exercise. Our plastic surgery providers will give patients support garments to wear as their breasts heal. It is also important to avoid doing any lifting during breast lift recovery, including lifting small children. Mothers recovering from breast lift surgery are advised to arrange for a caretaker or companion to help with the children; their ability to move around will be temporarily hindered.

Benefits and Risks of Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lift surgery can make a woman feel more attractive and youthful with perky and younger-looking breasts. However, the surgery (as any surgery does) has some associated risks, including infection, hematoma, seroma, temporary or permanent loss in sensation, and could create asymmetry between the breasts. If you are concerned about these risks, speak with one of our plastic surgeons who can address these possibilities in more detail.

Breast Lift with Augmentation

Breast lift does not alter the size of the breasts, it simply alters their position. If a woman desires higher and bigger breasts, it is recommended she combine breast lift with breast augmentation. Our surgeons can simultaneously lift the breasts and augment them with the placement of saline or silicone implants. This is a popular combination for women who notice significant changes in their breasts after pregnancy and opt for a “mommy makeover.” Mommy makeover is a comprehensive procedure combination that usually includes a breast procedure (such as breast lift) and a body contouring procedure (such as abdominoplasty).
